Artisan: Silence

Artisan Silence

Believing that the differently-abled should be treated with respect and not sympathy, a handful of deaf artists in Calcutta joined together in 1979 to find a way to help others with disabilities earn a living wage. The result was Silence, an artisan organization that's provided social and economic rehabilitation for the deaf and physically-challenged for the last 30 years.

Silence's high-quality artisan products are currently sold all over the world through the global fair trade network. Currently, over 115 physically-challenged artisans are employed full-time, earning an average of 3500 rupees per month -- a true living wage. An additional 550 physically-challenged workers make their living indirectly through Silence's programs. In addition to their wages, artisans receive health insurance and retirement benefits, profit sharing, and a free daily lunch.

To facilitate its large staff, Silence's facilities have grown to include a four-story workshop, fair trade retail store, training institute, and administrative offices. Silence also provides vocational training in arts and crafts, data entry, and computer hardware maintenance. Courses are recognized by accredited universities both in the city of Calcutta and with the state government's technical education department. Successful graduates find employment with Silence or other companies, and some graduates also receive assistance setting up their own businesses.

In 2002 Silence was awarded the Helen Keller National Award for employment of physically challenged persons. Two years later it received the Rashtrapati Award for Excellence from the President of India, as well as the state's Award for Service to the Handicapped. Silence is a member of IFAT (International Federation for Alternative Trade), AFTF (Asia Fair Trade Forum) and it's the founding member of FTF-I (Fair Trade Forum - India).
